FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How much will I be charged as a merchant? There is a small monthly fee charged by Back My Locals (only from September 2020) starting at R199 per month + VAT and the Payment Provider Fees charged per transaction. Full details on costs are provided in the Merchant Information Booklet. The Back My Locals Fee is invoiced at month end directly to the merchant and varies depending on the total volume of active gift cards in the system. The Payment Providers' Fees vary according to various factors but are typically in the region of 2-4%; information on these can be found on the Payment Provider websites - currently Zapper Fees or SnapScan Fees

  • Does my money go to the merchant? Yes, payments made by customers go direct to the merchants at the time of settlement using one of the Payment Providers (currently Zapper and SnapScan). Settlement times vary depending on the Payment Provider package the merchant has. Back My Locals has no access to these funds and does not hold these funds. The Payment Providers deduct their fees at the time payment is taken. The Back My Locals Fee is invoiced to merchants at the end of each month.

  • What happens to my gift card if the merchant goes out of business? Back My Locals is a gift card administrator. The gift card purchase relationship is between the merchant and the customer and the customer will need to contact the merchant for further information should this take place.

  • When will they expire? The expiry date for all gift cards will be 3 years from date of purchase as this is the legal requirement in South Africa.

  • How can I redeem my gift cards? The merchant has a copy of the valid gift card in their Back My Locals website account with a unique gift card reference number. The customer will have received an email with the same details. Authorised merchant employees can redeem gift cards using their Back My Locals merchant website account on their phone or a computer. They are then able to enter the unique gift card reference number provided by the customer and enter the amount to be redeemed (partial redemptions are allowed). The merchant's copy of the gift card in the Back My Locals system will be updated with the new balance.

  • Can I buy a gift card for someone else? Yes, when you buy a gift card on Back My Locals you can add a recipient email address as well as your own so that someone else can redeem the gift card you have bought. The platform will be updated to "send" gift card records to other users so that they show up in their Back My Locals account in a future release.

  • How do I know what gift cards I’ve bought? You will receive an email with the unique gift card reference for every gift card you buy. You can also check your gift card balance at any time on the Locals page of the Back My Locals site in the top right corner. In a future release customers will have a list of gift cards, their current balance and a list of transactions against that gift card in their Back My Locals account.

  • Are partial redemptions allowed? Yes, partial redemptions are facilitated on the platform.

  • How can I know I'm buying from a legitimate merchant? The team behind Back My Locals will perform checks on each merchant joining the site including a Bank Account Verification and a Company Registration or Sole Trader check.
